Step One: Contact each other and arrange a fixed time to meet in person. This first meeting should be relaxed – a time to get to know one another at a basic level and to lay the foundation for your mentorship.
Step Two: Get to know your mentor partner by asking questions about their life in Denmark, their educational background, professional experience, friends, family and interests. Start with general questions, delaying more personal topics once you have established mutual trust.
If your mentor partner doesn’t seem to want to talk about particular topics—don’t push! New relationships take time and your mentor partner may have reasons for shying away from certain questions.
Step Three: Establish basic communication guidelines, especially on logistical matters. What if either of you will be late to a session or needs to reschedule? KVINFO recommends that you agree to call your mentor partner if there is a last-minute change of plans. Agree on continuing your mentorship and immediately plan your next meeting time, date and place, discussing what you want to accomplish next time. In case of cancellation, try to reschedule within the 2 weeks following the cancelled meeting.
